Ohhhh... Just Do It Already
Created By: Herman, Marie On Wed, Mar 10, 2010 07:34 AM

Have you ever noticed how some people think about things they want to do forever, while other people just get out there and DO it?

You might think that with everything I do get done that I am always purposeful and get everything done that I want to do, but you would be wrong.

I've been thinking for years about publishing a book. I've even written several chapters and toyed with several ideas. And yet, that book still remains incomplete and unpublished. On the other hand, my neighbor (and friend) decided she wanted to write a book. Guess what? She's holding her published book (granted self published, but that's irrelevant - it's the route I would have taken as well) in her hands this week. I tell you what... Her accomplishing a task I have been thinking about for years has galvanized me to action. It's time for me to get off my duff and get that project completed. First thing I'm going to do, meet with her and find out exactly what process she followed to get it done (why reinvent the wheel?).

I have friends that have talked for years about becoming certified in Microsoft Office. For months and months and months, they have said, "I really want to do that. One of these days, I'll get started." In that same amount of time, I also decided that I wanted to become certified. So I picked a date and volunteered to lead a study group in my chapter (which FORCED me to do the preparation) and then I sat for the tests. Five study groups/four tests later, I'm now certified (no, I didn't take my Access 2007 test) at the Master Level.

My friends are still thinking they will get started one of these days.

It's so easy to become paralyzed with thinking instead of actually DOING what you want to do. It's why that inspirational quote I posted yesterday struck such a chord with me.

Vision without Action is a daydream.
Action without Vision is a nightmare.
                ---Japanese Proverb

It's far too easy to daydream our lives away. Days become weeks become months and we haven't done anything to accomplish our goals. We make excuse after excuse after excuse as to why we can't do it "now" but we will do it "someday". Isn't it funny how "someday" never arrives?

What have you been delaying? Why not start today DOING something to accomplish it? Maybe you could be holding your own book (metaphorically speaking) in your hands in the not too distant future.

Cool Cheryl! Thanks for the link. I have been checking out self publishers, but I hadn't realized Amazon had an option for it. I'll definitely be researching this.
Tried to add link to publishing info for amazon, and the link added at the bottom and not in the comment.
If you're going to self publish, look into publishing direct to Kindle. They're making some good deals with writers.
Great motivational blog, Marie. When I saw the quote yesterday I chuckled a bit thinking how true it is! Regarding your book: Go for it sister! Sometimes its those things like your friend's book that re-light our fire. Now that you've made it public to us, we'll hold you to it! ;) The one major thing in my life that I delayed forever was going back to school to earn that degree. I am finally doing it and it feels so good. Years ago when people told me that if you leave school it becomes that much harder to return, I didn't want to believe them. Of course I was young and knew it all back then! What I learned was that they were telling me the truth. Isn't it funny how as you get older you find yourself giving some of the same advice that was once given to you and refused to accept? Life is a continual lesson.
